In a world overflowing with options and opportunities, how do we discern whether something is merely good—or divinely orchestrated by God? Understanding the difference can shape the trajectory of your life.
Why Asking “Is It Good Or Is It God?” Is Critical
The question may seem subtle, but its implications are profound. What looks good to us may not be part of God’s plan for our lives. While something may seem beneficial, logical, or even moral, it doesn’t necessarily mean it aligns with God’s will.
Consider Eve in the Garden of Eden. The fruit was “pleasing to the eye” and appeared good (Genesis 3:6), but it led to separation from God. This powerful lesson shows us that “good” isn’t always “God.” When we allow the appearance of goodness to guide us without consulting God, we risk stepping out of alignment with His purpose for our lives.
How to Discern Between Good and God
1. Pause and Pray
When faced with a decision, don’t rush. Spend time in prayer, seeking clarity from God. Philippians 4:6 encourages us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Ask yourself: Have I truly invited God into this decision, or am I running ahead of Him?
2. Measure Against Scripture
God will never lead you to something that contradicts His Word. If the decision doesn’t align with biblical principles, it’s not from Him. Spend time reading and meditating on the Word, letting it guide your thoughts and choices.
3. Look for the Fruits
Does this decision bring peace, joy, and clarity? Or does it create confusion and unease? God’s will is often accompanied by His peace, even in challenging circumstances. Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us of the fruits of the Spirit—peace, patience, kindness, and self-control.
4. Seek Wise Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counsellors there is safety.” Surround yourself with trusted mentors, spiritual advisors, or friends who are grounded in God’s Word.
Why It Matters
Living a life aligned with God’s will isn’t just about avoiding mistakes; it’s about stepping into the abundant life He’s planned for you (John 10:10). God’s plans for you are bigger than anything you could imagine, but they require trust, discernment, and patience.
The world offers countless “good” things—opportunities, relationships, goals—but only God can offer the best. When you learn to ask, “Is it good or is it God?” you’ll stop settling for less and start walking confidently in your divine purpose.
